Level: Multiage class
Term one we got straight into the swing of things in the Googuhou classroom. This terms unit was ‘All about me’ and we focused on occupations and jobs that the students wanted to learn more about. Students were able to inform people of the different jobs that we had brainstormed in the school and in the community.
Aunty Fiona and Miss Deb were very helpful in our classroom, and helped all of the students with their research about their job, and with their school work.
We were also lucky enough to attend the first school camp of the year to Mudjimba. Students drew pictures and created a book about their camp.
Term two our unit was based around ‘I spy’. Students were immersed in texts that required looking hard and finding objects like Where’s Wally and I spy books. Students were fortunate enough to work with the Ratartat artists and create a ‘Can you find’ book of their very own. Students needed to brainstorm places in the community and school where they could hide, and then the artists painted the students up so that they were difficult to see. This was a very enjoyable activity and the book looks great! For ANZAC day, students made medals out of paddle pop sticks and chocolate éclairs, and we went to the memorial and ate ANZAC biscuits as we remembered those who fought for us in the war. End of term 2 saw our semester reports being taken home and shared with our families.
Term three was one of the busiest terms. Not only were we focusing on Sun Surf and Safety, but we also learnt more about the Olympics. Students were able to talk about safety at the beach and then they were able to tally up the Olympic medals won by different countries. We wrote to Australian Olympians wishing them luck, and worked on Olympic Powerpoints in our computer sessions with Miss Madonna.
In week 2 we celebrated NAIDOC day by visiting the different activities that classes had planned, and in week 3 we ran, jumped and cheered as our annual sports day was held. Tirzah from our class was fortunate enough to claim aged champion for her age group. Well done Tirzah!
To finish the term, students had a popcorn and DVD party and went to rest up for our final term of the year.
Term four has already been an extremely busy term. Our unit this term is Bushrangers and Gold Rushes, and students have been able to pretend to fossick for gold in the sand pits, make Chinaman hats and talk about the Bushrangers who are local to our area. Week 3 was our camp at Currimundi and all students enjoyed swimming, surfing and making kites. Students have been working hard on their testing and are getting ready for some Christmas activities. In week 8 students will perform the ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ at Awards Morning, and in week 9 we will enjoy an excursion to the cinema and lunch from McDonalds. 2008 has been a very busy year for the students of Googuhou!
