What's going on in Kugu class at Cherbourg State School ...

Level: Years 4 & 5
The year at a glance:

Term one was the start of a new year for our class. It was the second year that I had the same group of students and I was looking forward to broadening their learning throughout the year. This term we studied the topic “Me & My Community”. In this topic we looked at the students place in the Cherbourg community, and then Cherbourg’s place in the South Burnett and finally the South Burnett’s place in Queensland. The children did a lot of geographical work in each of these areas locating various major attractions and historical places in these regions. We had swimming on Friday’s of term one and we also tried for the first time some dancing with Josh and Andy from a dance company in Brisbane.

In term two we learnt about dreamtime stories. Aunty Venus came into our classroom and talked to us about dreamtime stories. The students then wrote their own stories and drew pictures to accompany their stories. In term two we also went on the camp to Currumundi. This was an excellent camp where the children that attended had to show good behaviour to be allowed to come on the camp. Everyone had an awesome time and couldn’t wait to go again. The Cherbourg State School Cross County Carnival was held and Jennifer Bond, Stormylee Fisher and Errol Simpson won their races. All students tried extremely hard and had a great time.

As the Olympics were in August we did an Olympic Themed Unit for term three. The students had a great time keeping track of the medal tally and competing in lots of games in the classroom where they had to keep track of their own scores. The concluding event for the unit was our own “Mini Olympics” held in the Complex. This was a great day where all of the students that competed had a great time. Term three saw the School Athletics Carnival take place. All of the students competed courageously on the day and had lots of fun. William Langton, Jennifer Bond and Stormylee Fisher did exceptionally well winning the age champion trophy for their respective age groups.

Term four started out as a very busy term. In the first week the year four students had to complete a Science test. This was the basis for our topic that we studied for the term which was the weather and the seasons. The children also had another camp to Currunumdi in which they all had a great time. Swimming started again and the students are enjoying learning how to swim and their strokes are progressing nicely. In the last two weeks the children will be working on Christmas activities and winding down from such a busy and exciting year.

Throughout the year students who showed “Strong & Smart” behaviour were allowed to attend film classes with Miss Tanya. The students who participated in this always had a great time and whenever I talked to Tanya about how the children in the class were going she always said that they worked extremely well for her. So well done to the film students.

This year has been very busy with lots of different things happening throughout the year. We had good readers and maths students going to Mr Hartley every week for some extension work and they enjoyed learning new things. It has been a hectic year where I have enjoyed watching the students progress socially and also in their schooling. I wish them all the best and I hope that 2009 can be just as good as 2008 was for them.
